Memorial Day Weekend 2010

Bluff Manufacturing is closed for the Memorial Day weekend! Got any plans for the long weekend? If you don’t have any major travel plans, there are always plenty of things to do around the Dallas-Fort Worth area on a three-day weekend, and this Memorial Day weekend is no exception. While this May holiday is a time when we pay tribute to our troops, it’s also a much-needed break from the daily hustle and bustle of life. If you choose to spend the weekend at home just relaxing or catching up on home improvement projects, more power to you. But if you want to make some hay while the sun shines – and the sun is definitely shining at temperatures exceeding 90 degrees now (as only North Texans can attest too) – then do indulge in some tax-free shopping!

As a community, we do our part in saving energy and money by being green. But with temperatures soaring now, there’s almost no way of avoiding the inevitable – cranking up the air conditioning and turning on those fans to cool down. This can’t be easy on the environment or our wallets. How can we counteract these negative effects? For one, if you’re in the market looking to buy major appliances such as a new air conditioner, refrigerator, clothes washer or some other energy-consuming household item, then this weekend is a perfect time to make that investment and save on taxes! Texans can get a break from both the 6.25% state sales tax as well the 2% local tax which adds up to the 8.25% on select energy-efficient products with the Energy Star designation granted by the Federal government.  This is a great time for Texans to go easy on their wallets and on the environment.

Here are some fun suggestions for our Bluff Manufacturing blog readers to do this long weekend in the DFW area:

There is plenty of action within our own neighborhood at The Fort Worth Stockyards this weekend – Summer Gunfight Shows, Cow Camp, and Neal McCoy LIVE in Concert! The Summer Gunfight Shows are FREE and provide plenty of entertainment for fans of the Wild West era. The “Cow Camp” is also free and provides loads of fun activities for families at the Fort Worth Stockyards and allow children and adults to have hands on, interactive experiences with the equipment used during the Cattle Drive Era. The Neal McCoy Concert is at Billy Bob Texas. Call the Stockyards or visit their website for more details on time and prices.

Go to the zoo! The Dallas Zoo’s new Giants of the Savannah habitat opened on Friday, (05/28/2010) at The Dallas Zoo, offering visitors an interactive experience with the gentle giants. The zoo is at 650 South R.L. Thornton Freeway, Dallas, TX 75203. Phone: 214-670-5656.

There’s the Memorial Day Car Show to appease the grease monkey in you. This is scheduled for Monday, May 31st, 2010 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at Lynn Smith Chevrolet, 925 N. Burleson Blvd., Burleson, Texas 76028. Call 817-797-1197 for more information, if you’re interested.

If you’re musically inclined, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s Memorial Day Concert will play at Flagpole Hill (8100 Doran Circle, Dallas, TX 75238) on Monday May 31, 2010 at 8 p.m. There is also the Richardson Community Band Concert, which will play on the Lawn at the Richardson Civic Center on May 30th, 2010 at 7 p.m.

If you are feeling fit and want to participate in a healthy activity, then there is the 20th Annual Memorial Day Run (20K and 5K Runs) on Monday, May 31st, 2010 at 7 a.m. at the Bath House Cultural Center, White Rock Lake, 500 E. Lawther, Dallas, TX.

And for the foodie in you that wants to contribute to a worthy cause, attend the Central 214 Memorial Day Patio Party at Central 214’s newly updated courtyard. Savor Chef Blythe Beck’s new late night menu and cool off with some refreshing summer cocktails, all while contributing to the North Texas Food Bank and its Summer Feeding Programs.

These are just a few things happening in our twin cities. But you can visit http://dallas.about.com/od/arts/tp/MemorialDay2010.htm for more ideas on what to do this weekend! Have a wonderful 2010 Memorial Day weekend!
