Safer, Smarter, and More Inviting: How Welch Transformed an Unsafe Ladder into a Modern Staircase Solution

Faced with an outdated and unapproved ladder, Welch needed a safer, more aesthetically pleasing alternative. With the help of Bluff Manufacturing, they replaced the hazardous climb with a sturdy steel staircase—enhancing both safety and design.

The Challenge

One of Welch’s buildings was built with a non-OSHA approved ladder that needed to be modified in order for it to be used by employees.

Not only was this ladder unsafe, its structure and look was rather uninviting. The original solution for this problem was to find an OSHA approved cage for the ladder, but upon looking, none could be found.

The challenge for Welch was to find a safe passage up the ladder without adding any unnecessary eye-sores in the process.

The Solution

To address these problems, Welch’s team decided to install a steel staircase, replacing the bulk of the ladder.

The staircase, ordered from Bluff Manufacturing, arrived quickly and unassembled.

Team members transported the parts up the parking lot service stairs and assembled the sizable staircase in place of the ladder.

The Outcome

To add finishing touches for safety, the stairs were anchored to the floor and they added a Wirecrafters cage around the two sides of the very top platform.

The staircase is wedged up against the wall with a mid-level platform, and a bright yellow exterior that gives the room a new inviting and safe feel.

Although most of the ladder was discarded, they left an 8’ section of it at the top of the new platform so that people could still access the roof safely.

Not only will team members feel safer going up these stairs, they won’t have to exert nearly as much effort as they don’t have to climb a whole floor’s worth of ladder.

Ben Stevenson, whose idea it was to convert the ladder into stairs was “extremely satisfied” with the new look and feel!
